EPA’s Criteria Pollutants: Nitrogen Dioxide Ozone Particulate Matter Carbon Monoxide Sulfur Dioxide Lead
National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) The EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) has set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for six principal pollutants, which are called "criteria" pollutants. They are Ozone, Particulate Matter, Lead, Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, and Nitrogen Dioxide. Each of the criteria pollutants have recently been evaluated to determine if new standards should be set based on the protection of human health. The lead standard is now 1/10 the amount it was a few years ago. Hillsborough County is currently failing to attain the standards for Ozone (county wide) and lead (1.5 km radius around Envirofocus).
