“There is unthinkingness….. not discrimination” - Jocelyn Bell Burnell

Outline A quick introduction Some thoughts on poverty, institutions and gender Guiding principles for WLE Specific instructions for management An outline of year one

Nicoline MSc in development sociology – adoption of technology, nrm, level the playing through eco-tourism PhD in rural sociology – access to resources, women’s groups sociology of knowledge and the capitals IITA - Nigeria FAO – Nairobi FAO – Rome

Paradigm shift Based on evidence and realities: Agriculture is a social process, mediated by people and by the demands they place on it. We made the problem – We can fix it

the equity triangle PovertyInstitutionsGender

Poverty and WLE Based on evidence and realities: poverty is a depravation of wellbeing, a lack of choices and opportunity, multidimensional, complex two lines of approaching: – access to goods and services – increasing personal income limits to influence on poverty link between the SRPs and poverty understanding poverty better

Institutions and WLE Based on evidence and realities: institutions are structures of social order and cooperation governing the behavior of individuals within a certain community institutions are fundamentally social and political – our contract with society? governance and institutions – formal and informal public/private – who is responsible access to information

Gender and WLE Based on evidence and realities that: gender is inherently political and cultural; women and men have different roles, aspirations, needs and opportunities; women have less access than men to productive resources and opportunities, but often carry the burden of providing nutrition and being guardians of natural resources; equity can be a real driver of change in agriculture and rural development.

Guiding principles: The 4 principles are: ensuring equal opportunities for men and women to access and control water, land and ecosystems. BUT not only access and control, understanding the institutions around it and also how to use it including enhancing capabilities. gender mainstreaming, poverty reduction and enhanced institutional understanding is the minimum, but the goal is to work on gender transformation and social equity. gender and social equity is a long term endeavor, requiring extensive engagement and possible organizational change, rather than a finite, single event.

Specific instructions Gender mainstreaming is easily agreed upon and put on paper, practicing it remains complex – M. Korma, AGRA gender officer support – lack of commitment = risk of resistance →deligitimization, denial, ‘lip-service’, shelving funding – including opportunities to access

Actions at the table – working group supporting SRPs and develop a GPI/PIG portfolio investing to show that gender makes sense, researching and highlighting the links between SRPs and poverty, developing a baseline of institutional issues develop linkages to other gender people/groups within and outside CG Today and tomorrow a gender strategy – but not too long….. set up fellowships within SRPs identify two to three areas to support and work on within SRPs (discussion)

Thank you!

Guiding principles That social equity is something we strife for, through developing equal opportunities That gender is inherently political and cultural Increasing the ability to make the right decisions Gender is often unseen and not understood Do mainstreaming but also transformative work – where and when possible Research within portfolios and develop own portfolio Gender is men and women – and it about Make sure you have a good baseline The consequences of interventions Not only the technology but also the capabilities of women
