THE BIBLE IS THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD GOD’S REVELATION OF WHO HE IS AND HOW WE ARE TO BE SAVED The Scriptures(means writing) of the Christian people

Bible is from the Greek word “biblia” which means books It is a collection There are many different kinds of writing: History Poetry Proverbs Songs Gospels Letters There are a TOTAL of 73 books in the Catholic Bible

The Bible has two MAJOR PARTS Old Testament: 46 books Tells about salvation history prior to the coming of Jesus Specifically about the creation of the world, man’s misuse of free will, God’s promise of redemption through a Messiah, Tells about God’s relationship with his chosen people the Jews(also called the Hebrews or Israelites) and the history of that relationship up to Jesus time Is written in the HEBREW language Sometimes called the Hebrew Scriptures New Testament: 27 books About the coming of the Messiah, God establishing a new covenant with this people contains the Jesus story as well as the spreading of the good news throughout the ancient world and the letters written to those people Most famous for the 4 gospels Is written in Greek but translated into Latin in the days of the early Church by St. Jerome Sometimes called the Christian Scriptures

The Pentateuch Also called the Torah First FIVE books of the Bible Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy Sacred to Jews Kept in the Ark of the Covenant Contains the Ten Commandments and all the dietary and other laws of the Jewish people
