Mencap and the National Forum Berge Kanikanian

Mencap I am going to tell you about some of the work that Mencap is doing.

Housing Valuing people now said people with a learning disability should have choice about where you live No one really knows how many people with a learning disability rent a home from a landlord, the council or a housing association. We think that maybe 800 to 1000 people with a learning disability own their home. This is a tiny number of people compared to everyone else.

Housing We do know that over half of the people with a learning disability live with their family. Most people, who do not live with family, live in care homes. A few people rent a home but these are often places that used to be care homes. Most people do not choose where and who they live with.

What Mencap is going to do about it We will Be campaigning to change the things that aren’t working Help people get the information, advice, help and support to change things for themselves Do more of the things that are working well for people Think about doing things in a different way to help people find a home. I have a handout with some more information.

Comprehensive spending review The government told us what they are going to do to save money We are worried about cuts for people with a learning disability We think some people will get less money and support in the future. For example cuts to mobility part of the Disability Living Allowance for people in residential care. There is more information at

Health People with a learning disability are still not getting equal healthcare Mencap will keep campaigning to make sure this gets better There is more information at

Hate crime Mencap are working with Valuing People Now to stop hate crime You can tell us about your story in the Mencap hate crime questionnaire. This needs to be done by 15 th December. If you want a copy please ask me. We will then tell the government what they need to do to stop hate crime. The Mencap topic for learning disability week 2011 will be hate crime.

Working together Please talk to me if you want more information have ideas about Mencap and the National Forum working together more in your area Please tell me if you want copies of Mencap information and I can send them to you. Thank you.
