Water Conservation Good for the Environment Good for your Community Good for your Wallet Rob McElroy, P.E. General Manager Daphne Utilities

What we’re talking about… What does water cost? Why conserve water? How will it effect ME? Will it really make a difference? Helpful hints Need assistance?

What does water cost? Water Rates – The first 1,000 gallons (a “unit”) is only $11.60 – Every 1,000 gals after that is $2.50 The Average Water Bill – Minimum User: $11.60 (about 1 cent per gallon) – Average User: 6,000 gals per month comes to about $24.00 (about a half cent per gallon)

Is that the only “cost”? First line of defense against water-borne disease We test our water every day, 365 days a year (including Christmas) We report water quality to you every year Our CCR (water quality report) is available online Visit us at daphneutilities.com

How does the cost compare? A gallon of water: 1 ¢ per gallon A cup of coffee: $ per gallon A can of Coke: $ 5.00 per gallon Milk: nearly $ 4.00 per gallon Cheaper than cable or cell phone Clean, safe drinking water is a bargain!

Why conserve water? Daphne is growing…FAST Good! – More people, businesses, opportunities Bad – Water demand is outstripping availability – It takes nearly 2 years to put a well into service …if you have the money to do so!

How much do we use? Permitted to 5.2MM gallons per day People often use more than 1,000,000 gallons per day watering their lawns New wells on the way We’re planning for your future!

How will conservation effect ME? Good for the Environment – No one wants to be wasteful Good for your Community – We want everyone to have the water they need Good for your Wallet – Conservation can save you $$$

Will it really make a difference? = 1 Per day25 swimming pools per month

What about droughts? We may have to enact water restrictions this summer as we did last summer. You can read our Drought Emergency Plan online

Helpful hints How can I start conserving water today???

Water your lawn only when it needs it Step on your grass. If it springs back, when you lift your foot, it doesn't need water. Water deeper & less often Saves 750-1,500 gallons per month. Brown grass is not bad.

Mulch is your Friend in the Summer! Mulch slows down evaporation. Saves 750 to 1,500 gallons a month Daphne offers FREE mulch!

Fix leaky faucets and plumbing joints. Saves 20 gallons per day for every leak stopped. Check your toilet for leaks!! Saves 400 gallons a month.

Shower Power A full bath tub takes gallons of water. Taking a five- minute shower uses 10 to 15 gallons.

Rub a dub dub… If you do take a bath, stopper the drain immediately and adjust the temperature as you fill the tub. Saves gallons each day!

Shave and a haircut… …a bit more than “two bits” Turn off the water while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of water to rinse your razor. Saves five gallons each day.

A sink full of money… The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons per minute. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime can save 8 gallons per day, or 240 gallons a month!

Need Assistance? Lend a HAND (Helping A Neighbor in Daphne) Program – Rounds your bill up to the next whole dollar – Ecumenical Ministries (EMI) is non-profit, non- denominational, United Way social service that assists members of the community in crisis – Your donation stays right here in Daphne
