I broke my arm when I was skiing. I lost my earrings when I was surfing. I was taking a shower when the phone rang.
All the previous sentences are in the PAST CONTINUOUS. We use it to talk about an action or event that was happening around a particular time in the past. We often use the PAST CONTINUOUS and the SIMPLE PAST together. Check the example in the next slide:
FUTURE PAST PRESENT I broke my arm when I was skiing. skiing accidentaccident
AFFIRMATIVE FORM WAS WERE WAS I YOU HE SHEIT WEREWE YOUTHEY ing. skiing.
NEGATIVE FORM I YOU HE SHEIT WE YOUTHEY ing. skiing. not WAS WERE WAS WERE
INTERROGATIVE FORM I YOU HE SHEIT WE YOUTHEY ing? skiing? WAS WERE WAS WERE
In this way, the PAST CONTINUOUS is used to say that a person was in the middle of a progressive action in a certain time in the past. PAST PRESENT I was taking a shower when the phone rang. I started takingI was takingI finished taking
And you? What were you doing this time yesterday? What were you doing before this class? What were you doing before you went to bed yesterday?
