Cornell Notes (Title) Cornell Notes (Title) ► Title of Slide ► Important Scientist Names ► Dates ► Key words & ideas (usually underlined) ► Info from textbook/stories ► Diagrams & Pictures ► Formulas ► Hint: ► Hint: Use arrows, circles or highlighting to emphasize important ideas. Date SUMMARY: Should be 3-4 sentences written to summarize the notes AFTER they have been taken.

What do you see?

How many legs does the elephant have?

Describe what you see.

Observations ► Use all 5 senses ► A noting and recording of….  FACTS!!!  Qua l itative and Qua n titative ► Qualitative (Words)  Describe  Example: The table top is black. ► Quantitative (Numbers)  Measurements  Example: There is one TV in the room.

Inferences ► Logical conclusion based on something already known or believed to be true ► Uses observations but creates an explanation or thought  Example: She is wearing a coat, it must be cold outside.

Observations? Qualitative: Quantitative: Inferences?

Note the Differences ► During experiments, scientists record observations NOT inferences ► Inferences are used in the conclusion in your lab report and come from research.

Let’s Practice… Make one observation and one inference.

There are two kayakers, so they are having fun.

Write a summary of your notes ► Draw a line where your notes ended. Your summary should be 3-5 sentences long. Needs to include a synopsis of what was discussed today. Examples of what was learned can be included in your summary. SHOULD NOT BE WORD FOR WORD FROM THE NOTES.

p.10 Out ?: 9/12/13 Write two observations & one inference about this classroom.

What do you see?

What do you see?

Can you build these shelves?

Does the square have curved sides?

What do you see?

Can you stack these blocks?

Can you build this?
