Lighting It’s Electric! (boogie-woogie woogie)

An Uphill Battle Lighting is the single most difficult thing to do on a movie set. Every facet of production revolves around lighting. Things like costumes, set design, camera movement, film stock, lens type, etc. are influenced by how the scene is lit.

The Lighting Team Director of Photography- In charge of the look and feel of the lighting scheme as well as acting boss for the electric crew, camera crew, and grip crew. Gaffer- Chief lighting technician. The DP’s second hand man. Best Boy- Gaffer’s second in command. Deals with a lot of management things.

The Lighting Team Third Electric- Equipment prep., placement. Grunts Key Grip- Rig all lights (set up)

Mad Skills All members of the lighting team are going to be well versed in the following: *Electrical Safety* *Electrical conversion (watts, amps, voltage etc)* *Image Control* *Lamp/bulb Specifications*

Quality of Light What kind of shadow will it produce? Hard or diffused What angle is it coming from? How bright is it? It’s intensity How bright is it compared to other lights? Lighting contrast What color is it?

Lighting/Film Style Two types depending on indoor and outdoor use. Each dictates a specific color temperature Indoor we refer to as Tungsten Outdoor we refer to as Daylight

Color Temperature Named so because of the color a object turns when heat is increasingly added. Tungsten degrees Kelvin Daylight degrees Kelvin

Most Basic Three Point Lighting Key- Brightest;casts primary shadows Placed off camera axis; high enough to avoid nose shadow Fill- Fills shadows made my key without creating new shadows Backlight-Produce highlights on hair or shoulders.
