What is a Sentence? A sentence is any unit of language that communicates an idea. -Very simple -Ex: 2 year old, “Want milk” -Very complex -Ex:“If you do not mind, and it is not too troubling, I would appreciate a glass of milk to quench my thirst.”

Language acquisition -Acquired before age 5 -Children who do not speak before 2 to 3 years (in most cases) will never acquire language fully, if at all -Sentence sense -Because you learn it at a young age, it is easy for you to make meaning out of sentences…

You try The following sentences are arranged out of order. Rearrange the following words into groups that make good sentence sense. 1.Floor the boy sprang lazy to clumsily the 2.Toast Olivia her on French sugar sprinkles. 3.The open graduate eager young the envelope ripped shouted and, “More money!”

You have control! You are in control of what you say, thus you are also in control of what you write. HOWEVER When we write how we speak, it does not always convey the message we intend. Therefore, we must practice.

Combining, Rearranging, Adding, Subtracting On your own, combine the four sentences by rearranging, adding, and subtracting: There is a pig The pig wallowed There is a puddle The puddle is muddy

Brain = Greatest Computer Because you have used our language most, if not, all your life, it was easy to make the sentences into one. Combining: Put 4 sentences in one Rearranging: Mixed the order of words Subtracting: Took unnecessary words out Expanding: Added words to make the sentence fluid.

Practice Turn to page 7. Share an STD ( ) with your partner(s) and complete exercises 1-10 ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER. Use your knowledge of combining, rearranging, adding, and subtracting to put the sentences together.
