IPAT MODEL What is the impact of a society’s lifestyle on the Earth?

IPAT I = impact P = population A = affluenceI = P x A x T T = technology Looks quantitative, but not really: It’s a conceptual model of the major factors that influence environmental impact

IPAT P = Population –All else being equal, more people will have a greater impact on the environment A = Affluence –Generally, the more affluent a society or individual is, the greater the impact on the environment –BUT: affluent societies can afford to mitigate their imact

IPAT T = Technology –Complicated –Technology can harm the environment, such as a coal-burning power plant. BUT: a central source of power might be better than every individual home burning wood for heat, light, and cooking WHY?
