Quickwrite in your CNB 1. Fully describe a goal or dream that you are working toward. 2. What is the purpose of this goal? 3. What are the steps necessary to attain your goal? 4. What strengths do you possess that will help you along the way?

Plan for today  Analyze poems in groups, present, & discuss.  Background on author of The Alchemist  Simple Things

Roles for Groups 1.) Choose or assign roles: -Reader-Leader-Secretary-Deliverer 2.) Reader - Read the poem out loud to the group. 3.) Each person will then read it independently. 4.) Leader – Read each question and guide the discussion. 5.) Secretary – Record your groups answers from the analysis sheet. 6.) Deliverer – Be prepared to deliver your analysis to the class.

Paulo Coelho  Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in  Parents had him institutionalized in a mental hospital (3 times) for wanting to pursue his dream of becoming a writer

Paulo Coelho  Became rebellious and got involved in the hippie movement in the 1960’s.  Wrote popular Brazilian rock songs.  He was imprisoned and beaten by a military dictatorship.

Paulo Coelho  He then decided to tame his radical behavior.  He had a spiritual awakening in Spain and wrote about it in his first book The Pilgrimmage(1987).  He was 38 when he published his first book.

Paulo Coelho  His second book, The Alchemist, has made him famous.

Fable  Short narrative that makes a moral point.  Usually involve legends about supernatural or mythical characters or events.  Typically use animals. Ex. The Tortoise and the Hare  The Alchemist is a fable about following your dreams.
