Jim Thorpe The Man and the Town Justina Reph Local History Project

Goal of this Project Students will learn using primary sources about the town in which they live and the man that it was named after. There is a lawsuit over the body of Jim Thorpe. You will have to take a stand on that issue.

How to use this PowerPoint: If you see the following on the bottom right hand corner, move on to the next page. If you see you have completed your task for the day! This project will take about 5 days to complete.

How you will be graded: Let’s face it, the next few slides are very important since many of you like to know how you will be graded! On the next couple of slides, you will see rubrics for different activities. Please refer to these at any time.

How did the town Jim Thorpe, PA get its name? Using the scale, about how many miles is Jim Thorpe from East to West as well as North to South. Click on the following link: ult/article/magazine/MAG / 6/index.htm ult/article/magazine/MAG / 6/index.htm Take turns reading aloud with your group members. After you read the complete article: Answer the 1 st worksheet (SEA) in your packet as a group. We will then discuss this when everyone is completed.

Exploring the man your town was named after! Using the SEA worksheet, analyze this picture of Jim Thorpe.

Use the SEA Worksheet to analyze this picture. Complete the Venn Diagram to compare this picture with the one on the page before. Each member of the group must write one paragraph about how you think he felt after completing in the Olympics or after seeing these pictures of himself.

Jim Thorpe the Man View the following two videos on Jim Thorpe: Choose one of the videos and complete the NARA video worksheet. (This is located in your packet.) After everyone is finished, groups that analyzed video 1 will meet and groups that analyzed video 2 will meet to discuss their results. After about 10 mins of discussing with the groups, we will discuss both videos.

Audio Go to the following site: oeSong.html Listen the song about Jim Thorpe (the person). oeSong.html Go to the following site: Listen to some Native American Music. Lastly, go to the following site: =1&t=1&islist=false&id= &m= Pay special attention to what they say in this newscast. You may even want to take notes. =1&t=1&islist=false&id= &m=

Final Project Paper After all of this research on Jim Thorpe the man and the town, you must now each write a 5 paragraph essay persuading someone of the following: The town of Jim Thorpe should give the body back to Jim Thorpe’s son. Or The town of Jim Thorpe should NOT give the body back to Jim Thorpe’s son. (You MUST follow the rules for a persuading essay!) Here is another document that may help you make a decision: sons-battle-to-rebury.html sons-battle-to-rebury.html
