Quotes and Themes from The Call of the Wild By: Jack London By: Maddie T. and Lauren U.

Theme: Survival of the Fittest

Example One: Buck’s Survival of the Man in the Red Sweater “He was beaten, but he was not broken.” –Jack London “A dozen times he charged, and as often the club broke the charge and smashed him down.” –Jack London Buck was scared about what was happening but put up with the Man in the Red Sweater so that he could survive.

Example Two: Buck’s Food and Water Starvation Buck wasn’t fed much by Hal and Charles, but he learned that he needed to eat his food before the other dogs took it. “It was heart breaking, but Buck’s heart was unbreakable.” –Jack London “He did not mind the hunger so much, but the lack of water caused him severe suffering and fanned his wrath to fever-pitch.” –Jack London

Example Three: Surviving the Other Dogs Buck had to adapt to the dog sled team, even though him and the others were completely different. Buck learned to be like the other dogs and to stand up for himself by using his strength and power. “He had killed man, the noblest of all, and had killed in the face of the law of club and fang.” –Jack London

Theme: Being Loved

Example One: Judge Miller and his Family Buck had a home where he was loved by the Judge himself and his family. “Buck went swimming and hunting with the Miller sons. He went on rambles with the daughter. And with the grandsons he would carry them on his back and roll in the grass.” –Jack London

Example Two: John Thornton “Love, genuine passionate love, was his for the first time.” –Jack London Buck saved John Thornton twice because of how much he loved him, once when John was drowning and another time when he made a bet but didn’t have the money that he needed, so Buck made sure that he won the bet for John.
