Victory In Jesus 1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Background Of The Church In Corinth – Acts 18:1-11 Context: 1 Cor. 15:1-3   Paul had “preached,” the gospel. vs. 1   The Corinthians had “received.” vs. 2; cf. Acts 18:8   By which they were “saved.” vs. 2; cf. Rom. 1:16.   Which Paul had “received. ” vs. 3; cf. Gal. 1:12

Background – The Gospel, Based Upon 3 Facts:   “ Christ died for our sins.” vs. 3; Mt. 26:28; cf. Heb. 2:9   He was “buried.” vs. 3; Mt. 27:57-61; cf. Isa. 53:9   He “rose again the third day.” vs. 3; Mt. 16:21; Luke 24:13-21, 46; cf. Mt. 28:6

Proof of the Resurrection, 1 Cor. 15:5-11 Jesus was “seen” by:   Cephas. vs. 5   The twelve. vs. 5   Over 500 brethren at once. vs. 6   James. vs. 7   By Paul. vs. 8; Acts 26:16.

Consequences – If There Is No Resurrection, (15:12-19) Then…   “Neither hath Christ been raised.”vs. 13   “Our preaching is vain.” vs. 14   Your “faith is also vain” vs. 14   “We are found false witnesses,” vs. 15   “Ye are yet in your sins.” vs. 17   “They that are fallen asleep in Christ have perished.” vs. 18   “We are of all men most pitiable.” vs. 19

Consequences – If There Is A Resurrection (15:20-34)Then… It is a fact that Jesus WAS raised from the dead.   Christ, “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep,” vs. 20; cf. Lev. 23:10.   “As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive,” vs. 22   Jesus is reigning over His kingdom, vs   If there were no resurrection, then let “us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die,” vs. 32.

Affirmation: There Will Be A Bodily Resurrection! 15:   Alluded to a question raised by “foolish” people who asked “How are the dead raised? And with what manner of body do they come,” vs. 35?   Illustration of seed sown into the soil. vs   Compared that which is sown with that which is raised, vs   Concluded by saying “as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly man,” vs. 49. (NKJV )

Examine Text – 15:50-58   “Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,” vs. 50. cf. 2 Cor. 4:16ff; 1 Pet. 1:4; 2 Pet. 1:10,11.   Hence we “must be changed.”   When? “The last…trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised” vs. 52

The Dead Shall Arise 1 Cor. 15:52 BOTH GOOD AND BAD. 1.John 5:28-29 “ALL that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth…” 2.Acts 24:15 “that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and the unjust.”

The Resurrection Of The Righteous Will Be At THE LAST DAY. John 6:40, “And this is the will of him that sent me, that everyone which seeth the son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.” John 6:44 “No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.” John 6:54 “Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the LAST DAY.” –

Judgment Of The Wicked Shall Be At THE LAST DAY. John 12:48 “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in THE LAST DAY.” 1 Thess. 4:13-18… No Second Resurrection In This Passage.

Examine Text – 15:50-58   In a “moment” (atomos) “that cannot be cut in two or divided, indivisible” (Thayer).   In “the twinkling of an eye” vs. 52   “to throw, cast. A quick motion, such as a fling or toss. In the NT, a blink of the eye, a wink, twinkling (1 Cor 15:52 referring to a moment of time [cf. Lk. 4:5]). (The Complete Word Study Dictionary:)   The ones addressed. Vs. 52, cf. 50

The Change That Will Then Take Place:  “  “ This corruptible must put on incorruption,” vs. 53.   “This mortal must put in immortality,” vs. 53.

When This Happens…  “  “Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory,” vs. 54. cf. Isa. 25:8 Praise for God.   “Victory” occurs but three times in the writings of Paul; all three times are in this section! Vs. 54, 55, 57.

What Must I Do To Be Saved?   Hear the gospel. Rom. 10:17   Believe the Gospel. Mk. 16:15,16   Repent of sins. Acts 2:38   Confess faith in Jesus. Acts 8:37   Be Baptized. Acts 22:16; Gal. 3:27   Always abound in the work of the Lord. 1 Cor. 15:58; cf. Mt. 11:28
