What is Persuasion? When you use persuasion, you are making an argument to convince someone or group to do, say, or think the same as you. For example: Persuasion can make you: 1.take action 2.Support a cause 3.Accept an opinion 4.Consider an idea 5.Spend money

Viewpoint Every piece of persuasive writing has a viewpoint. Viewpoint is called the writer’s opinion, which is a statement of belief that he/she wants to explain and then support.

Viewpoint Usually the viewpoint is just one sentence long. The viewpoint might contain phrases like the following: “I think we should…” “I believe we could…” “The point is…”

Fact and Opinion Facts are statements that can be proven to be true by using numbers and statistics and completing surveys. Opinions are statements of belief. This means that SOME people believe something to be true, but not every one. If every one doesn’t believe, then how could something be true?

Supporting Details The supporting details back-up the writer’s viewpoint or argument he or she is making. The supporting details contain facts, figures, statistics, and examples.

Denotation The meaning of a word you will find in a dictionary. For example, if you look up the word snake in a dictionary, you will discover that one of its denotative meanings is "any of numerous scaly, legless, sometimes venomous reptiles having a long, tapering, cylindrical body and found in most tropical and temperate regions."

Connotation The emotional response or suggestions that a word triggers within you. Words can have a negative or a positive connotation. For Example: John is nothing but a snake in the grass! How does this make you feel about John?
