Introductory Paragraphs And Thesis Statements

Sentence One State the title, author and subject of the novel, poem, play, short story etc. – In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, the reader follows Huck on his many adventures down the Mississippi River with Jim, a runaway slave.

Sentence Two States Topic Huck begins his journey as an immature 13 year old boy wishing to run away from his abusive father and the restrictions and rules of society.

Sentence Three States three areas of exploration (points you will discuss in each body paragraph). Through his adventures, Huck discovers the hypocrisy of society, the freedom of life on the river, and the value of friendship.

Sentence Four States the results of the three sub-analysis points: your argument, aka – THE THESIS STATEMENT Huck matures into a young man who is capable of making strong moral decisions regardless of society’s beliefs and expectations.

A Thesis statement…. …..is one of the greatest unifying aspects of a paper. It should act as mortar, holding together the various bricks of a paper, summarizing the main point of the paper “in a nutshell” and pointing toward the paper’s development. It should be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.

N.B…… Do not use the 1 st person pronoun in your essay. Use 3 rd person. Always use present tense when writing about literature.
