Three Questions to Ask When Studying the Psalms 1) Where is the Psalmist spiritually? - Who is he? - What is he saying? - What does the Psalm mean? 2) How does this relate to Jesus? - We should expect Jesus to show up in every part of the Bible (John 5:39). - Jesus shows up in two primary ways in the Psalms: a)First, He identifies with the experience of the Psalmist, but in an even more profound and deep way. b) Second, He fulfills what is promised in the Psalms in a unique and ultimate way. 3) In light of the truths, how should we respond? - How do we apply what we’ve learned to our lives? Who was Asaph? Asaph wrote twelve Psalms in total – #’s 50, Asaph was a Levite and chief musician among whom King David appointed to oversee the worship of Israel. Psalm 73 wasn’t written overnight – it’s a journey through many years of the life of Asaph.

Psalm 73 2But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. 3For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

Psalm 73 4They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. 5They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills.

Psalm 73 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. 7From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.

Psalm 73 8 They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression. 9Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.

Psalm 73 10Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. 11They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?"

Psalm 73 12This is what the wicked are like-- always carefree, they increase in wealth.

Psalm 73 13Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. 14All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning.

Psalm 73 15If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed your children.

Psalm 73 16When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me 17till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.

Psalm 73 1)Sees the true fate of the wicked. 18Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. 19How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! 20As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

Psalm 73 2) Sees the true condition of his own heart. 21When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, 22I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.

Psalm 73 3) Sees the goodness of God in the midst of everything else … 23Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. 24You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. 25Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 27Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

Psalm 73 28But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

Psalm 73 Challenge Can you say without reservation, “God is good?” What if … You lose your job? You face a tragedy? The doctor tells you you’re sick, and it’s bad? A loved one dies? He doesn’t provide a husband/wife/child? You suffer from chronic pain/ depression/disease?

Philippians 4:11b-13 11b…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
