DNA Tells Students They Aren't Who They Thought Sun Shuangyong & Yuan Xiquan

Before reading  How much do you know about DNA and the DNA tech applied for special use?

Vocabulary  1. Samuel M. Richards, who teaches Sociology 119, Race and Ethnic Relations, to 500 students each semester, said the DNA tests, which were conducted last year for the first time, were very popular with the class.

 2. When I teach I try to demonstrate to students how complex race and ethnicity are," Dr. Richards said. "My secondary goal is to improve race relations, and when people discover that what they thought about themselves is not true

 3. It leads them to be less bigoted, to ask the deeper questions, to be more open to differences.

 4. Modern migration patterns are also leaving a mark  5. Mr. Harrison, who says that as a child he molded himself to be more black, does not want this new information to change his identity.

Structure of the article  How does the author organize the materials to form the article?

Comprehension  1. According to Samuel M. Richards, why are the DNA tests popular in the students?  2. What is the aim of Samuel M. Richards to give DNA tests to people?

 3. Is it true that we get more percentage of genes from our latter ancestors than our earlier ancestors ?

Discussion  Do you believe that the DNA tests can really tell where we come from?  In your opinion, why do people want to take the DNA test? Will you take the test? Why?

 Are the DNA tests meaningful to us? Can it really change our life and make others have different attitude to us?  Dr Richards think the DNA tests can improve race relations; do you think it is true?

Thank You
