Senatus Populusque Romanus “The senate and people of rome”

At the start of the empire Rome was governed by two men, they were called Consuls. They were helped in making there decisions by the “Senate”. The Senate meeting with the Consuls.

Prefects were the all rounder’s, they did the grunt work for the senate, some heard court cases and others ran markets. Tribunes were the Micheal Davitt of the past they stood up for the poorer people in the Senate and were a major political voice in those times.

These men took control of a conquered area & were in control of the army garrisons in the area.

Around 27 B.C Roman politics started taking a turn.

In 27 B.C. Rome was no longer controlled by a Senate or a Consul. The Empire was now ruled by the army’s generals although this was not recognised.

At the time a man named Augustus was in charge of the Roman army. He came up with a plan that would keep him in power but it would look like he was helping the poor. He decided that he would use the army to gain control of the senate and make himself Emperor !!!

(Trumpets blow ) I HERE BY DECLARE THAT ROME SHALL FOREVER MORE BE RULED BY AN EMPEROR!!! LONG LIVE AUGUSTUS CEASAR!!!!!!!!!!!

A metal statue of Augustus A sketch of Augustus

In Rome they had some “issues”. Overpopulation and thieves are just a few of them.

In Rome your life depended on where you were born and who you were born to.

0- Birth. 5-School. 10-Finished school. 15-Married (if a girl) Army if a Boy. 20- Child (girl) Army (boy) Business (boy). 30-Child (again) Army (possibly) Moved to a new home. 40-New home with wife and kids. (farm, shop, pub etc). 50 to death-Settled down with kids and land.

In Rome they didn't have strict enough rules & regulations on entrance to Rome.

The low-life. Easy access to the city & rich districts.
