PRJ566 Project Planning and Management Course Project Selection

Agenda  System Selection  Team Selection  Project Requirements  Other course requirements  Forms

System Selection  Select a computer system that you see a need for  You are encouraged to have a real client for your system but that is not a requirement  The most important factor: Choose a system that interests you!!

System Criteria 1  The system must access and update databases, must generate reports and must carry out some kind of transaction processing (e.g. creation of sale, updating of inventory)  Games might not use databases; in that case they must do some kind of file manipulation

System Criteria 2  The system must be of a “reasonable” size as judged by the 566 instructor  The instructor can help each team increase/decrease the size of their system by suggesting adjustments to scope

Some Suggestions  A system to support a clinic  A system to support a church group  A system to support a sports team  A system to support a small manufacturing business  A game

Agenda  System Selection  Team Selection  Project Requirements  Other Course Requirements  Forms

Team Selection  3 to 4 people  NO exceptions to the 4 person limit  Programming skills required!

Team Challenges  Projects that fail almost always fail because of team problems  Team communication is the biggest problem  “Not doing work” is the next biggest problem

Handling Team Challenges 1  If a team is having problems with a specific member, the team must talk to that person right away  THEN come and see the instructor if the problem is not resolved

Handling Team Challenges 2  See the instructor immediately if your problem is not resolved quickly  If it’s TOO LATE your instructor cannot help you

Agenda  System Selection  Team Selection  Project Requirements  Other Course Requirements  Forms

Project Requirements  By the end of 566 you must deliver a complete system design  Note: You cannot pass this course without delivering a complete and acceptable system design as part of a team—your system must receive a passing grade.

Major Project Deliverables  Carried out in iterations (see PRJ566 web site, assignments link)

Agenda  System Selection  Team Selection  Project Requirements  Other Course Requirements  Forms

Other Course Requirements  Work Related to the project: Presentations In-class work or home work  Much of the analysis/design work will be carried out in class  Team members not present will not get the marks assigned Quizzes

Agenda  System Selection  Team Selection  Project Requirements  Other Course Requirements  Forms

Forms  To identify your project and get approval: A Project Proposal form (on the prj566 web site) A Team Proposal form (on the prj566 web site)
