Just like any other network, Instagram requires the user to create an account with a password and username. (Similar to Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Even though it is an App, it is considered a Social Network. It is not just a photo editor.

Follow other users’ photo streams as they post them. People can follow you back. Unless a user is set to private, you can automatically follow them. “Profile” button at the bottom right at the screen allows you to search for friends by name or find ones that are already connected to you by another social network. The “home” button is your news feed icon where all of the people’s pictures will show. (who you follow) You can like or comment on any pictures in your news feed.
The “Popular” section (star or heart) helps you find creative followers and some of the most interesting photos to look at. Once you have taken the picture, you can choose from multiple settings (filters). Including a blur button, boarder button, and a contrast button. These features can be previewed before actually choosing.

Once your photo is ready you can upload it not only to Instagram, but to other social networks. You may caption your picture also.
