EPIC ENGINEERING PATHWAYS INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
W. P. DAVIDSON HIGH SCHOOL ENGINEERING PATHWAY INTEGRATED CURRICULUM (EPIC) Offering students an EPIC high school experience in math and science
W. P. Davidson Engineering Pathway Integrated Curriculum (EPIC) Board: Mr. Robert Foley, University of South Alabama College of Engineering, Assistant Dean Dr. James Laier, President, Southern Earth Sciences, Inc., PIE Dr. Joseph Olsen, Civil Engineering Chair, University of So. Ala. Dr. Aaron Williams, Meteorology Program Director, University of So. Ala. Dr. Michael Doran, CIS Coordinator, Robotics sponsor, University of So.Ala. Dr. Lloyd Scott, Director Environmental Studies Center Mr. Reggie Copeland, Mobile City Council Mr. Michael Thompson, Chief Engineer, Corps of Engineers Dr. Scott Hopkins, Curriculum, University of So. Ala. Ms Sue Laffitte, MCPSS, Retired
Why is EPIC needed? Today’s graduate needs a strong math and science background not just for college, but for life Our research and area colleges inform us that engineering preparation must begin early in a student’s school career. While Mobile county offers a variety of special programs in other areas, no school was offering a specialized Math/Science College Preparatory Pre- Engineering Program Davidson’s EPIC program fills that void in Mobile
WHAT IS EPIC? A PROGRAM WITH 2 COMPONENTS: –A CHALLENGING COLLEGE PREPARATORY CURRICULUM WITH A MATH AND SCIENCE FOCUS –A PROGRAM TO PROVIDE EPIC STUDENTS WITH CAREER GUIDANCE AND EXTRACURRICULAR EXPERIENCES IN HIGH SCHOOL RELATED TO ENGINEERING AND RELATED FIELDS
WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM? ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE 4 MATH AND 4 SCIENCE COURSES TO GRADUATE… EPIC STUDENTS’ REQUIRED 9 th and 10 th grade ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, and SCIENCE COURSES WILL BE TAUGHT WITH PROBLEMS THAT SHOW STUDENTS HOW TO APPLY THE MATH TO SOLVE SPECIFIC ENGINEERING PROBLEMS
In the 11 th /12 th grades, EPIC students will choose from a variety of math and science courses to fulfill their college and career goals, such as EPIC Advanced Placement Physics, Chemistry, or Calculus EPIC Honors Special Engineering Topics in Mathematics, EPIC Technical Presentations/Power Point EPIC Computer Programming, or EPIC Architectural Residential Design.
In addition, EPIC students will complete at least one extracurricular activity related to their goals: Build a robot for Robotics competition Design a circuit board to operate electronics Make a power point presentation about Engineering Collect data from Davidson’s campus weather station and analyze it to make decisions for an Engineering simulation Participate in the University of South Alabama’s ACE program, an engineering careers program Mentor with a practicing Engineer to complete a project Join Science Club, Math Team, Engineering Club
The EPIC Minor The EPIC Minor is a program for students who may not wish to complete the full pre- engineering curriculum, but are interested in a related field, such as: Weather/Meteorology, Weather Broadcasting, Drafting and Design, or Environmental Sciences
The EPIC minor will not require as many math and science courses as the full EPIC Major, but allows all of our students to take advantage of those EPIC courses they are most interested in
EPIC CERTIFICATION Students who complete the EPIC Major will present a portfolio of their project work to an EPIC review Board in their senior year The review Board will determine that the student has met all requirements The successful EPIC student will then receive Certification, and will be recognized at Graduation for that Certification
COLLEGE CREDIT In a special arrangement with the University of South Alabama, successful EPIC students can earn college credit for certain EPIC courses they complete while at Davidson
Admission Requirements for the EPIC Major: Successful completion of high school algebra or geometry in 8 th grade 8 th grade Stanford scores at/above 60 th percentile Teacher recommendations from Math, Science, Language teachers and one teacher of student choice
Students’ will be blind ranked by SAT score and 8 th grade grade average and accepted until program vacancies are filled each year
Admission Requirements for the EPIC Minor: Successful completion of 8 th grade math/science 8 th grade Stanford scores at/above 60 th percentile Teacher recommendations from Math, Science, Language teachers and one teacher of student choice
How Do I apply? Get an application form from Guidance and Because school is already out, this first year group is exempt from getting teacher recommendations You will have to attach your 8 th grade report card to your application when you turn it in
