CHAPTER 21 9 th ediition Skills in Running Meetings

QUESTIONS THAT FACILITATE DISCUSSION  What information do we need to explore the problem?  Are there other ways we can go about this?  What do you think would happen if we did this...?

FACILITATING THE GROUP PROCESS  Preparing for the Session  Setting the Stage  Stimulating Discussion  Developing an Action Plan

ENCOURAGING NEW AND DIFFERENT IDEAS  Stimulating Novelty Through Analogies  Using a Checklist to Stimulate Novelty  Reframing the Issue to Stimulate Novelty  Cautions

USING PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE  Clarification of the Procedure of Motions 1) Privileged motions 2) Incidental motions 3) Subsidiary motions 4) The main motion or question

Discussion of Common Parliamentary Procedures  Adjournment  Question of Privilege  Rise to a Point of Order  Appeals  Out of Order  Amendments  Motion to Limit Debate  Motion to Table  Withdrawal of a Motion  Motion to Rescind (repeal)  Substitute Motion  Unanimous Consent

“PARLIASENSUS”  The term, “parliasensus,” is not in the dictionary; it is a term coined to reflect the idea that meetings often combine parliamentary procedure and consensus. Generally, group decision making is informal and characterized by consensus, although a superficial form of parliamentary procedure is also used.

RECORDING GROUP DISCUSSIONS  NAME OF GROUP  DATE  CHAIRPERSON  PRESENT  MEETING PURPOSE  PROBLEM/ISSUE  MAJOR POINTS OF DISCUSSION  Assignments By Responsible Person

SUMMARY  Methods organizations can use to foster a good flow of ideas leading to decisions: Asking questions Facilitating a group process Encouraging new and different ideas Making decisions using parliamentary procedure.  Selection of method is based on the group context.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION  1)What issue in your organization or community would you select for discussion?  How would you arrive at a resolution: Consensus? Creative thinking? Parliamentary procedure?  2)How would you record the meeting?
