THE RENAISSANCE

RENAISSANCE ( ) A rebirth or revival of learning which occurred first in Italy and slowly spread to Western and Northern Europe. Emphasis is placed on the classical civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome.

RENAISSANCE ( ) Rebirth of ancient Greek & Roman worlds Church power declined Society recovered from the plagues & instabilities of the Middle Ages Upper class more affected than the lower classes Churches, wealthy homes, and public buildings displayed art that celebrated the human body, classical antiquity, and religious and secular themes

Renaissance started in the Northern Italian city- states because: a. Politically - feudalism was never established in Italy. Italy was more of an urban society. Wealthy princes and merchants ruled these towns. (Ex. Medici family ruled Florence) b.Economically - trade with the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs brings wealth to the Italians. Wealthy merchants can support (patronize) the arts and beautify their cities/show their power.

Renaissance in Western and Northern Europe differed from the Renaissance in Italy because: a. feudalism had been stronger - Kings and Queens were patrons of the arts instead of merchants and bankers like in Italy. b. Renaissance scholars in Northern Europe took a more traditional approach than did the Italians.

Renaissance scholars believed in the importance of education. They were practical people who wanted to learn about the world and rediscover the knowledge that had been lost or forgotten. This was brought about by the “rediscovery” of works by the ancient Greeks and Romans. School of Athens by Raphael

Humanism was the Renaissance movement based on the literature and the ideas of the Greeks and Romans, such as the worth of each individual. Humanities - subjects taught in ancient Greek and Roman schools: Grammar Poetry Rhetoric History Moral Philosophy

Renaissance scholars believed that an education could ensure a full and rewarding life. Renaissance scholars studied the Humanities. Emphasis is now placed on the individual. Goal was to create complete citizens This appeals to the wealthy merchants and bankers of Italy, who are already concerned with education and individual achievement. Northern scholars try to blend these ideas with Christianity.
