A who’s who of the Protista Kingdom
What are The five kingdoms? Monera PROTISTA Fungi Plantae Animalia
What is a Protist? Do any of these look familiar?
What are the characteristics of the Kingdom Protista? 1. Eukaryotic 2. Heterotrophic and Autotrophic 3. Live in aquatic environments 4. Unicellular or multicellular 5. Reproduce both sexually and asexually
What are the three types of protists? 1. Algae – the plant-like protists 2. Slime molds – the fungi-like protists 3. Protozoans – the animal-like protists
Algae- The plant like protists Key Characteristics: Autotrophs Use chloroplasts to make food. Examples include Euglenoids, Dinoflagellates, Diatoms and Seaweeds.
euglenoid Example: Euglena
Example: plankton Dinoflagellates and Diatoms Diatoms
Green Algae Provides most of the Earth’s oxygen!
Brown Algae Known as kelp and used for food.
Red Algae
Slime molds- the fungus like protists Key Characteristics: Heterotrophic Decomposers- Feed on dead plants and animals Examples include Plasmodial slime molds, Cellular slime molds, Water molds
Slime Molds
Protozoans- the Animal like protists Key Characteristics: Heterotrophic Most have projections used for movement. Examples: Ciliates, Zooflagelletes, Amoeboids (Apicomplexans)
Ciliates Cilia Example: Paramecium
ZooFlagelletes Example: Giardia Flagella
Amoeboids psuedopod Example: Ameoba
Apicomplexans Example- Plasmodium (causes malaria) Inside Red Blood Cells
