10/7/12 I -STARTER: Warm up STARTER: What do you think the difference is between a mineral and an element? Use complete sentences.

9/30/11 Tape in Your Warm up and Complete Justify Your Answer Choice: I -STARTER: Warm up II- PRACTICE: We will begin looking at elements and discussing how to properly write an elements symbol. Your notes from the discussion will go here to help you prepare for future activities and discussions about elements.

The Basics of All Substances

A Tree What Are It’s Parts? Leaves Branches Roots Trunk Stems Etc.

A Leaf What Are It’s Parts? Veins Covering Cells Etc.

A Plant Cell What Are It’s Parts? Vacuoles Cell wall Nucleus Chloroplast Etc.

A Chloroplast What Are It’s Parts? Chlorophyll Etc.

Chlorophyll What Are It’s Parts? Magnesium Nitrogen Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen

Elements What Are Their Parts? Elements are pure substances consisting of one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. For chlorophyll the elements are: C = carbon H = hydrogen O = oxygen Mg = magnesium N = nitrogen

Elements How Are They Named? All known elements are listed on the periodic table. There are about 90 naturally occurring elements. Some are named after people, places, or from Latin or Greek names. Since there are only 26 letters in our alphabet a systematic way to write their symbols was developed.

Elements 3 Naming Rules Rule 1 – PRINT all symbols Rule 2 – If there is only 1 letter, that letter is always a capital. Ex: H for hydrogen Rule 3 – If there are 2 letters, the 1 st letter is a capital and the 2 nd is a small case. Ex: He for helium
