Child Maltreatment ► Definition: actions or inactions harming children (under 18)  Psychological/emotional or physical ► Child Abuse: deliberate actions causing harm ► Child Neglect: failure to meet child’s needs

Child Maltreatment ► Neglect outnumbers abuse 2 : 1 ► Signs of neglect: failure to thrive ► Signs of abuse: hypervigilance ► Guest Speaker… assessing abuse ► Reported vs. substantiated maltreatment

3 Levels of Prevention ► Primary: broad, large-scale, benefit everyone ► Secondary: narrow, small-scale, target high-risk areas ► Tertiary: after the fact, prevent long-term consequences of problems rather than the problems themselves

Severe Psychopathology ► Primary: Prevent prenatal complications  Free pre-natal health care (20% reduction) ► Secondary: Decrease stress for populations at-risk  More non-skilled labor available  Wage subsidies ► Tertiary:  Free psychological care
