Ready for 1 st Grade Your child should be able to: Write first and last name using upper and lower case letters Tie shoes State full name, birthday, address and telephone number
Read Kindergarten Sight Words with fluency Read color words Read number words 0-10 Write numbers Know initial and final consonant sounds Know the difference between a letter, word, and sentence
1 st Grade Reading Recognize spelling patterns, vowel combinations and vowel sounds in words Identify unknown words using several strategies: phonics, sounding out word parts, and using context clues Read high frequency words (60 wpm) Recognize sight words
Read with fluency and expression Demonstrate comprehension by summarizing, retelling, and responding to questions about stories Retell story events in sequence
1 st Grade Writing Write complete sentences to answer questions Retell stories in written form Recognize and use steps of writing process Write personal narratives, persuasive paragraphs, informational paragraphs and responses to literature using phonetic spelling and basic sight words Write Traits- Ideas, conventions, sentence fluency, organization and word choice Write Score Assessment Uniform in writing expectations-common rubric used by all 1 st grade teachers to assess writing assessments
Steps of Writing Process Prewriting – Planning (Graphic organizers) Drafting - Putting thoughts onto paper Revising – Changing for meaning (choose nouns, pronouns and action words to describe or explain) Editing – Correcting for standard conventions of English (capitalization, punctuation, and spelling) Publishing – Displaying work to be shared
Spelling-Words Their Way Students assessed and placed in their in the appropriate level during lst month of school Spelling tests will begin after Labor Day Friday’s spelling test will cover your child’s spelling pattern for the week
Listening and Speaking Follow two-step and three-step oral directions Listen to and takes turns responding to questions in complete sentences Share information or experiences within a group Listen to and retell stories in own words
Research Locate and use resources in the classroom (map/globes, computer, dictionary, etc) Use Media Center to check out materials independently Alphabetize words Recognize and use table of contents
