Tools and Equipment Trowel- used for applying plaster Hawk- used for holding plaster whilst plastering Float- gives good surface for second coat Spot board- keeping the plaster on so its easier and quicker to use Plaster- for coating the walls Stanley knife- for cutting plasterboard Plasterboard- smooth surface to plaster on Nails- for attaching plasterboard to batterns Hammer- used to apply nails Buckets- for mixing plaster in Bucket trowel- getting excess plaster of the edge of the bucket Paddle- used to mix plaster Spirit level- used for leveling and floor screeding Rasp- use to smooth the edges of plasterboard Scrim-tape- used for sealing the joins of plasterboard Feather edge- for ceilings and one coat work Scratcher- used to give a key for final coat

Types of Plasterboard Plasterboard- this is the “common” type used to line stud partitioning. It is simply hardened plaster between two pieces of paper and can be used on ceiling and walls. Insulated board- is a bit more than just plasterboard, it comes with a layer of insulating foam attached to the rear side to improve the thermal insulation of the room. Damp Proof board- has a damp proof membrane attached to the rear side, usually coloured silver and looking like kitchen foil. Sound insulation board- to reduce the noise. Fire resistant board- offers increased resistant to fire - by the nature of plasterboard, the standard type offers some degree of fire barrier but fire resistant board has an enhanced barrier effect. Tapered board- this is the most common and the easiest to use. As the name suggests, each board is tapered at each edge so when two pieces are butted together the joint can be more easily concealed using scrim and joint compound.

Question 1 Q. What is multi- finish used for? A.Multi finish is used for the final coat, it is good for using after undercoats and board finish background and is ideal for small jobs and patching.

Question 2 Q. Why do plasterers use PVA on walls? A. Plasterers use PVA on pre plastered walls to seal the surface and ensure that the new plaster bonds properly and it doesn’t take the moisture from the new plaster to quickly.

Question 3 Q. What health and safety equipment should you wear in the workshop? A.The health and safety equipment that should be worn for plastering are: -goggles -gloves -safety boots -overalls if wanted

Question 4 Q. What is a plasterers Darby? A. A plasterers Darby is used to give a level finish between two solid points that would be difficult to level with a hand trowel. It usually has adjustable handles to allow you to set it to the position you are comfortable with.
