09/03/2010 ADO-PO section meeting Beam Pipe Extraction/Insertion R. Vuillermet

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Content  Purpose of the project  Beam Pipe environment  Beam Pipe extraction scenario  Required tooling  ADO-PO implication - schedule

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Purpose of the project - Purpose : - Take out the VI beam pipe and bring an other beam pipe inside the Inner detector. - Why : - In case the VI beam pipe has problems (leak, break …) - To install an additional 4 th layer of pixel. (Phase I upgrade) - Purpose of the project : - Define the scenario, identify and develop necessary tooling, establish the procedure to be able to take out the beam pipe in the ATLAS environment. - Define and control the working condition of the operators during the whole operation.

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam Pipe environment

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam Pipe environment Supporting collar PP1 area 6 supports for the VI Beam Pipe End Cap Silicon Discs region Pixel region End Cap Calorimeter IP Point Barrel Calorimeter VI Beam Pipe

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam Pipe extraction scenario Open the ATLAS detector and install access platform Side A Very large opening Side C Standard opening

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam pipe extraction scenario 1- Open Inner Detector end plates on both sides 2- Arrange and protect services in PP1 region 3- Cut Beam Pipe flange on side C 4- Remove sealing bellows on both sides 5- Install the “Long Guiding Tube” on the insertion table Side A Side C

09/03/ R. Vuillermet End-plate bellow Support collar Pixel bellow Adjusting cables for inner collar

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam pipe extraction scenario 6- Insert the Long Guiding Tube into the Beam Pipe 7- Connect the Long Guiding Tube on their extremity supports 8- Survey and adjust the extremity position of the Long Guiding Tube 9- Remove the beam pipe extremity wire and beam supports Side A Side C

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam pipe extraction scenario 10- Install 8 wire extension-pre-tension systems 11- Insert the wire and ring removal tool on side C 12- Disconnect the ring and wire and extract them on side C 13- Bring and position on side A the beam pipe shielded container Side A Side C

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Beam pipe extraction scenario 14- Extract the beam pipe thanks to the extraction/insertion table 15- During the extraction collect the wire system on side A 16- Shield the Beam Pipe into a container 17- Move on surface the shielded container

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - Long Guiding Tube The function of the Long guiding tube are : - Support the Ph0 Beam Pipe during its extraction. - Guide the Ph0 Beam Pipe while guarantying no contact with the Pixel B- layer. Technical characteristics : - Embed the necessary equipment to control the deflection in the area defined by Z+/- 450mm /IP Concept : - By applying an eccentric force at each extremity of an aluminum tube, deform it (vertical bowing) in order to compensate the natural sagging of the Ph0 Beam Pipe F F Beam Pipe Long Guiding Tube

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - Long Guiding Tube Deformation of the Ph0 Beam Pipe under its own weight = 38 mm Deformation of the Ph0 Beam Pipe with the support of the Long Guiding tube (internal force 5700N) is in the order of +/-3mm Space between Beam Pipe and Pixel = 7mm

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - Long Guiding Tube More advance Engineering studies are currently under development at CERN and in Brandeis University Beam Pipe with a controlled deflection thanks to the Long Guiding Tube Long Guiding Tube deforms due to the internal force and due to the weight of the beam pipe

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - Wire removal systems  The functions :  To disassembly the support collars and to take out of the inner detector all the pieces.  Constrains :  The space to insert the tooling is limited to 7.5 mm radial around the beam pipe  No access to control the operation  A tooling as been designed and developed. A series of test will be performed on the scale one mock-up to improve, to test and to validate the tooling.

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - New wire suspension system  Purpose : - Support the weight of the new Beam Pipe - Adjust the position of the new Beam Pipe  Concept : - Replace the aluminum collars by a cable collar requiring no intervention for its connection to the beam pipe. - An elastic ring open the cable collars when their is no tension in the cables. Once there is tension the elastic ring come into contact with the beam pipe. - The elastic ring and the cables will be inserted before the installation of the new beam pipe.  Validation : - the concept will be tested on the scale one mock-up for validation.

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Required Tooling - Extraction/insertion table  Purpose : - The purpose of this table is to Guide and support the beam pipe during its extraction/insertion. This table will also allow the insertion of the IBL package.  The technical characteristics : - This table will look like the Barrel Pixel insertion table with special interface for the beam pipe. - This table will allow different movements (rotation and translation) to be able to take and bring beam pipes with surface crane. - In function of the radio protection requirements (currently under calculation) a shielded carrier will be used to insert the beam pipe once extracted.

09/03/ R. Vuillermet How our section will be involved in this project ? - Design office : - CAD Integration work - Define working envelops - Define CAD environment - Integrate models coming from institutes - Communication in the project and in between the institutes - CAD sharing (CWN) - Project technical exchange (WG3 meeting) - Definition of the scenario - Develop the full extraction/insertion scenario - Development of tooling - Scale one mock up - Wire removing system, wire pretension mechanism - Interface support with ID - Mechanical simulation for validation - Operating team - Machining of scale one mock-up accessories - Assembling the scale one mock-up - Organizing and preparing the working area in building Testing and developing prototype tools - Maintaining and developing the scale one mock-up stand until the in-situ operation - Safety team - Radioprotection calculation - Optimization of the extraction/insertion procedure - Definition of cavern and intervention safety requirements - Development of a “personal remote supervision and assistance system” - A close collaboration between personal of the 3 sub-sections is mandatory to face this new upgrade challenge

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Schedule Frame coming form UniGe - Delivery of the frame beginning of April Equipment of the frame is done at CERN in April, May June such that it becomes a copy of the in situ detector Assembly of the scale one mock-up is plan for summer 2010

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Schedule A full assembly with the cavern configuration and equipments is plan for the beginning of 2011 Test Prototype tooling and improvement during summer and fall Service protection equipment -Wire removal tool -Wire tension system

09/03/ R. Vuillermet Schedule In Technical test, validation, improvement with : - The Long guiding tube - The extraction insertion table - Optimization of the intervention time - Optimization in the number of operators - Development of the personal remote supervision and assistance system (web cams, communication with the cavern, etc)
