2 Genetic engineering the changing of an organism’s DNA to give the organism new traits RECOMBINANT DNA – DNA that contains genes from one or more organisms Genetic engineering the changing of an organism’s DNA to give the organism new traits RECOMBINANT DNA – DNA that contains genes from one or more organisms

Recombinant DNA  Made by inserting foreign DNA into Plasmids  Plasmids are tiny rings of DNA from bacteria 3 Restriction site  A bacteria with the new recombinant plasmid is Transgenic (has one or more genes from another organism added to its genome)

4 Biotechnology Provides: Improved food products Medical advances An enhanced environment Improved food products Medical advances An enhanced environment

INSULIN  An example of a medical advancement due to genetic engineering  Human insulin is a hormone that helps your body use sugar, and keeps blood sugar levels from getting too high or too low  The gene for human insulin is inserted into plasmids  The transgenic bacteria containing these plasmids make human insulin  The human insulin can be harvested from the bacteria and used to treat people with diabetes 5

Herbicide Resistant Crops  Soybeans: Roundup Ready  Corn: Roundup Ready, Liberty Link  Cotton: BXN, Roundup Ready  Canola: Liberty Link, Roundup Ready 6
