Question Which type of tree will have the most relief from the sun?
Purpose The purpose of my investigation is to determine what type of trees will provide the most relief from the sun. This is important because I want to know what tree to stand under on a hot day to stay cooler.
Hypothesis I hypothesize that an oak tree will provide the most relief from the sun. I believe this because oak trees have more branches.
PROCEDURE
Materials *One thermometer *5 different types of trees
Variables Manipulated: Type of tree Responding: Temperature Constant: - Thermometer - The time the day to record - Time standing under the tree and sun
Directions 1 Gather materials 2 Stand under direct sun for two minutes with thermometer. After two minutes, record the temperature. 3 Stand under an oak tree for two minutes with thermometer. After minutes record temperature 4 Repeat steps 2-3 with a lugustrum tree 5 Repeat steps 2-3 with a golden rain tree 6 Repeat steps 2-3 with a queen palm tree
Directions 7 Repeat steps 2-3 with a pine tree 8 Repeat steps 2- 7 for 4 more trials 9 Calculate the average difference between temperature in direct sun and under tree each type of tree.
DIFFERENCE IN TEMPERATURE - DEGREES CELSIUS TRIAL 1TRIAL 2TRIAL 3TRIAL 4TRIAL 5AVERAGE Temperature in Sun TYPE OF TREE Lugustrum Golden Rain Queen Palm Oak Pine
Conclusion My hypothesis was incorrect. The oak tree did NOT provide the most relief from the sun. The queen palm had the most relief at 12.8 degrees, the lugustrum at 15.6 degrees, the oak tree at 17.2 degrees, the golden rain at 19.5, and the pine tree at 21.2 degrees. If I had to do this again, I want to control the placement of the trees. I wonder if it would be warmer with a person under it?
