Warm-Up Activity In 3-5 sentences explain what you think happens to form tides.
Gravity Gravity is stronger when objects are closer together. The moon will pull the water on the side of Earth nearest it more strongly than it pulls on Earth itself. The positions of the moon can also effect the time and the height of the tides.
Spring Tide In line with the full moon, new moon, and the sun. The greatest tidal range. High tides are especially high and low tides are especially low during the Spring Tide. They occur twice a month.
Neap Tide In line with the quarter phases. Not in line with the sun. High tides that are not very high and low tides that are not very low. Occurs twice a month.
Effect of Perigee Perigee The closest point to Earth in its orbit. Tidal effect is greater Especially if it occurs during the new moon and full moon phases.
Effect of Apogee Apogee Farthest point from Earth. Tidal effect is less.
Tidal Range The difference in the water level between high tide and low tide is called the tidal range. Tidal ranges vary from one body of water to the next. There’s two high tides and two low tides in a 24-hour period.
Ending Question In 5-8 sentences explain… What moon phase does spring and neap tide occur at? What is spring and neap tide tidal range? How does gravity affect the tidal range?
