I write to you, children, because you know the Father. (14) I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (15) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world. (17) And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

1 John : Session Seven 4 Verses I write unto you, little children. John calls all the saints "little children." He divides them into three classes, "fathers," "young men," and "little children" (1John 2:13), but the Greek word rendered "little children" (spiritual infants) in 1John 2:13, is a different one (spiritual children but not infants) from that of 1John 2:1 and 1John 2:12. I write unto you, fathers. These father have known him. Not known Christ in the flesh but have walked with him long and realized his presence. Young men. The special excellence of these Christian young men is that they have overcome the temptations of the evil one. Little children. These have known the Father, and can say, "Our Father who art in heaven." I have written. This verse, imitating the Hebrew parallelism*, repeats 1John 2:12-13 with slight variations. *Parallelism is the expression of one idea in two or more different ways."Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path". (Psalms 119:105)

1 John : Session Seven 5 1Jn 2:15-17 Love not the world. An exhortation to all three classes just named. The love of the world and of God are not reconcilable. See James 4:4. By "the world" is meant the ways of the world, its passions, pleasures and pursuits. For all that is in the world. This sinful world is comprehended under three heads. The lust of the flesh. The desires which spring from the appetites and passions. The lust of the eyes. The desires that are aroused by appeals made to our eyes. The pride of life. The vain glory of the world; its foolish display. Sensuality, avarice and pride, nearly, but not quite, illustrate what is meant. And the world passeth away. All things are transient, but he who does the will of God builds on eternal foundations.

1 John : Session Seven 6 A Christian Should Understand the Times - I John 2:18-20 Childrenhour antichristmany antichrists we know that it is the last hour Theyoutustheynotus theyustheycontinuedus theyoutit might become plain they notusyou have been anointed by the Holy Oneyou all have knowledge Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. (19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. (20) But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.

1 John : Session Seven 7 Little children, it is the last time. We are in the last era. Ye have heard that antichrist shall come. False Christs and those opposed to Christ. See Mat 24:4. Anti-Christ is simply Anti-Christianity. Whereby we know that it is the last time. Their appearance is a part of the series of events which leads to the final consummation. They went out from us. This implies that these antichrists were apostates. The worst men are often those who were once outwardly religious and have fallen away. If they had been of us. Had they been true and genuine Christians they could hardly have fallen into such a state of enmity. Their going away and bitter opposition show that they were not real converts.

1 John : Session Seven 8 But ye have an unction. You are anointed with the Holy Spirit. Christian means an anointed one; Anti-Christ would mean against the Anointed. Hence John reminds them that they have been anointed by the Holy One. Know all things. All things needful to guard against these opposers and seducing teachers. It is the privilege of those who have this anointing to know Christ experimentally (John14:22-23). John 14:22-25 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?" (23) Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (24) Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. (25) "These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.
