Fear the Trusted Insider John 18:1-2 – 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples. 2 Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples. Judas knew the most likely place to find Jesus 2

Praying in the Garden Matthew 26:36-38 – 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me." 4

For Discussion Jesus apparently needed time alone with the father –Why take Peter, James and John with him? What was Jesus deeply grieved about? –How and why “to the point of death”? What were the apostles to “keep watch” for? 5

Jesus’ Prayer Continues Matthew 26:39-41 – 39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.“ Didn’t Jesus know that it wasn’t possible for this to happen any other way? –Why pray for something else? The important thing is that He is ready to do the will of the Father 6

A Ministering Angel Luke 22:43-44 – 43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. Even in the deepest agony, God has not forgotten Jesus Dr. Luke is very descriptive –Hematidrosis 7

Sleeping Disciples Matthew 26:40-41 – 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Peter always seems to get the bad press –How could they sleep at a time like this? Why would Jesus chastise them? 8

Ongoing Petition Matthew 26:42-44 – 42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done." 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. Why does Jesus continue to ask the same thing? 9

The Betrayer is at Hand! Matthew 26:45-46 – 45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" Jesus has to wake the disciples for the final hour 10

The Romans Arrive John 18:3 – 3 Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. A cohort was the smallest independently operating unit of the Roman army –As large as 500 men 11

For Discussion Why involve the Romans at this point? –Temple guards had failed to arrest Jesus earlier Why send a unit this large for Jesus? –Think of what is currently happening in Jerusalem Thousands of pilgrims in Jerusalem for Passover The Romans would have been more than happy to assist in apprehending a troublemaker 12

Whom Do You Seek? John 18:4-6 – 4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5 They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground. 13

For Discussion Why would a cohort of Roman soldiers fall back from an itinerant Galilean preacher? This is an “I AM” declaration –Jesus spoke with the authority of deity There had to something awesome in Jesus’ appearance He may have given Himself into the hands of sinners and be on is way to the cross, but He was still GOD 14

I Said... John 18:7-11 – 7 Therefore He again asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene." 8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way," 9 to fulfill the word which He spoke, "Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one." 15

For Discussion Jesus wants the arresting body to plainly state that they are here only for Him and that the others are free to go We often read that such and such happened that Scripture would be fulfilled John clearly holds Jesus’ words in equal stature to Scripture –“So that Jesus’ words would be fulfilled...” 16

Impetuous Peter John 18:10-11 – 10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?“ Was Peter left-handed? –Or just bad with swords? –Or both? 17

Legions of Angels Matthew 26:52-54 – 52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?" Twelve Roman legions consisted of 72,000 men 18

The Power of Darkness Luke 22:52-53 – 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours." 19

For Discussion The Chief Priests could have arrested Jesus at any time –Why did they not? –For fear of the people So they come under cover of darkness to avoid the intervention of Jesus’ followers 20

Jesus Arrested John 18:12a – 12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him... The wheels are now in motion –Jesus is bound for the cross –He will fulfill His mission –Death and Hades will not stand in His way –He will rescue His children 21
