Biology

The goal of biology is to investigate and understand the natural world, to explain events in the natural world, ad to use those explanations to make useful predictions.

Biology noun Science that seeks to understand the living world.

Biology Bio = life

Biology ology = the study of

Biology Biology = the study of life

Biology Say three times “Biology is the study of life”

organism

Organisms and their environment are interdependent.

organism noun An individual living thing that can react to stimuli, reproduce, grow, and maintain homeostasis.

organism Something that is alive.

organism Turn to your partner and say … “Biology is the study of life. _______ is a living organism.”

biotic factor

Biotic factors that influence a bullfrog might include the tiny plants and algae it eats as a tadpole, the herons that eat the adult frog, and other species that compete with the bullfrog for food and space.

biotic factor noun The biological influences on organisms within an ecosystem

biotic factor Bio = life Something living that impacts another living organism.

biotic factor Turn to your partner and say … “_________ is a biotic factor that affects me”

abiotic factor

The bullfrog is affected by abiotic factors such as the availability of water and the temperature of the air.

abiotic factor noun Physical, or nonliving, factor that shapes an ecosystem.

abiotic factor prefix “a” means NOT If “bio” means life, “abio” means not life (or not alive) Something NOT alive that impacts a living organism.

abiotic factor Turn to your partner and say … “_________ is an abiotic factor in our classroom”
