Instruments of Measurement

A balance is used to measure the amount of matter an object contains and is measured in grams.

To find the mass of an object, first make sure that the balance is calibrated.

Mass your material. Stop when the pointer reaches the balance point.

When reading the balance, the 100's and 10's place is simply read by looking at the number located in the "window" of the mass.

The 1's place is read by locating the number on the gram dial, just to the right of the zero mark.

The tenths place is read by counting the number of lines between the zero mark and the ones digit to the right of the zero mark.

The hundredth's place is located by finding the line on the hundredth's scale which matches (or lines up with) any line on the gram dial.

Since the third line as you go from the.05 line to the.10 line is indicated, 8 goes into the hundredth's place.

Spring scales measure the weight of an object in Newtons.

A graduated cylinder measures volume or amount of space something takes up and is measured in milliliters (mL).

Read a graduated cylinder from the bottom of the meniscus, which is the curve in the liquid. 53mL

Do NOT use beakers or flasks when measuring liquids.

Thermometers are used to measure the temperature in degrees Celsius ( o C)

Rulers or Meter sticks measure length in METRICS!
