An Introduction to the Internet
Presentation transcript:

No one knows how large the Internet is and no one is in charge of it. The Internet is many, many computers all over the world hooked up to one another so they can exchange information.

The Internet allows you to access vast amounts of resources and up-to-date information on a wide variety of topics.

The Internet allows for people to exchange electronic messages with anyone in the world.

Our school uses a browser called Netscape. A browser is a special kind of software that allows a person to view webpages on the World Wide Web through pointing and clicking on links. The next slide shows you how to get into Netscape.

Double-click on the Netscape Communicator icon.

A homepage is the first screen, called a "page," that you see when you view a site.

To get to a homepage, you must type in an URL (Universal Resource Locator). Every file and page on the Web has a unique URL which is that page’s address on the Web. Here is the URL for Edison... /edison This is the location window where you type in the URL.

Search by typing in the URL (address) Search by using a designated bookmark Search by subject or title through a kid- safe search engine

Use a designated bookmark. Click on BOOKMARK and find the site that was assigned by your teacher.

Type in the URL that was given to you by your teacher.

Use ONLY kid-safe search engines. Kid-safe search engines must be approved by the classroom teacher.

You can use a “link” to get from page to page by placing your mouse over the highlighted word or words. Your cursor will turn into a hand and you can click to get to the next page. These highlighted links are in blue.

To go back to the previous page, click on BACK found on the navigational toolbar. To go to the next page, click on FORWARD found on the navigational toolbar.

Read over the Acceptable Use Policy with a parent. Return the Internet Use Agreement with your signature and your parent’s signature. Follow ALL rules on the next slide.

The student’s Internet driver’s license will be displayed at all times while using the Internet. The student will only go to sites designated by the teacher. There is no surfing! The student will not have access unless it is through teacher for a school purpose. The student will not be allowed to access the Internet unless a teacher is present in the room the entire time. The student will not give any personal information out over the Internet. The student will pay fifty cents to obtain a new license if the original gets lost.

An unacceptable Internet Use Incident form will be filled out and given to Mr. Fitzanko or Miss Thompson Mr. Fitzanko or Miss Thompson will revoke or suspend the Internet license for a determined period of time. Parents will be notified.

We are fortunate to be in a school district that values our learning. Let’s make the most of it when entering “Cyberspace” to learn about the world outside of our classroom!
