Using ArcGIS ModelBuilder for Conservation & Ag Drainage Projects Janell Weiss Nutrient Mgmt. Specialist/Ag Technician Darke Soil & Water Conservation District 2015 Ohio GIS Conference September , 2015 | Hyatt Regency Columbus| Columbus, Ohio

OUTLINE Background ModelBuilder introduction Watershed tool inputs & output Demonstration Advantages Limitations Future goals Helpful resources

OUR NEED FOR THE WATERSHED TOOL: Calculate runoff for designs of grassed waterways, wetlands Grass waterway Watershed boundary

OUR NEED FOR THE WATERSHED TOOL: Prepare watershed maps and assessments for agricultural drainage projects

OUR NEED FOR THE WATERSHED TOOL: Delineate watersheds to aid agricultural pollution investigations (e.g., manure spills)

MODELBUILDER: AN INTRO An application in ERSI’s ArcGIS Strings together a series of geoprocessing tools Feeds output of one tool into another tool as input Simplifies workflow when a series of geoprocessing steps are necessary

MODELBUILDER TOOL EXAMPLE

MODELBUILDER WATERSHED TOOL Input LiDAR GRID files Parcel shapefile SSURGO soils shapefile Output Contour shapefiles Flow accumulation raster Watershed mean slope raster Raster of merged LiDAR tiles Parcels clipped to watershed boundary shapefile Watershed outlet “pour point” Longest flow path raster Watershed boundary shapefile

1. MERGE TILES & DETERMINE FLOW PATHS

2. DELINEATE WATERSHED, CALC SLOPE & LENGTH, CLIP SOILS & PARCELS

THE MODELBUILDER WATERSHED TOOL Allows watershed delineations to be done in minutes rather that in hours or days Is easily shared with other districts/agencies Produces a product that is consistent in appearance Pollution complaint Grassed waterway Field tile main

PROVIDING CONSISTENCY IN MAPS ModelBuilder allows you to define layers  Each displayed output can be tied to predefined “layer” file  “Layers” allow you to control the appearance of a shapefile  Establish symbology, labels, transparency, etc. Watershed boundary Soils classification, hydrologic group, & acreage label Parcel boundary and label

LIMITATIONS Output data is no better than currently available LiDAR Tool cannot detect presence of culverts  Delineations tend to be poor near railroads, roads, bridges, driveways, some rooflines

FUTURE GOALS Use land use/ land cover data to calculate runoff for waterway design Develop tool for calculating assessments for group drainage projects If you know of a land use/land cover data set with a resolution finer than 30 m x 30 m grids, I am all ears.
