Productivity will likely increase because of improved relations (for both you and your team members). It may reduce the amount of stress in your work environment because of improved relations between you and team members. This doesn’t assume that relations between you and your team members are poor; only that it is important to continuously improve wherever possible.

Copyright © Vital Learning Corporation When to Coach CJS-6 When a new team member is hired. When a team member’s performance has slipped. When poor performance is caused by a lack of skill. After the team member has demonstrated the task, probe for further questions and provide advice about where to go for help if needed. As the team member’s competence grows, review less frequently but continue to reinforce his/her progress. Performance problems usually require more than one coaching session for satisfactory solution. Coaching session should occur in relative privacy. CJS-12

Copyright © Vital Learning Corporation How to Make Learning Easier for Team Members CJS-13 People learn best in a pleasant environment. People learn by seeing and doing something over again (practice) until they have mastered the skill. Adults learn best when the need to know is there. A new skill or concept is best learned if the team member can associate or relate it to something he/she already knows. People learn at different rates.

Copyright © Vital Learning Corporation Characteristics of an Effective Coach CJS-14 …a change agent facilitating the transfer of skills to team members to increase their growth and lead to greater productivity. “Coaching, at its heart, involves caring about people…and acting on a deep-down belief in the potential of every person to contribute over time, by providing the tools, elbowroom, and frequent, concrete, believable feedback.” - Tom Peters
