PERSONAL HEALTH & WELLNESS An Introduction

Health & Wellness Defined… Health: A state of complete social, emotional, and physical well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO) Wellness: Being actively engaged in attitudes and behaviors that enhance quality of life and maximize personal potential.

The Dimensions of Wellness PHYSICAL Good nutrition, regular exercise, avoidance of harmful habits, recognizing disease symptoms, regular checkups, practicing safety, etc. EMOTIONAL Optimism, trust, self-esteem, self-control, finding solutions to emotional problems, appropriate responses to events, etc.

Dimensions of Wellness Cont. INTELLECTUAL Enjoy learning, open to new ideas, ability to think critically, imaginative and creative, seeks new skills, curious, investigative, etc. SPIRITUAL WELLNESS Actions in line with beliefs, adherence to guiding principles & doctrine, moral behavior, etc.

Dimensions of Wellness Cont. SOCIAL Positive and satisfying relationships, caring for and serving others, developing good communications skills, contributing to worthy causes, etc. ENVIRONMENTAL Awareness of environmental threats to health protecting yourself against such hazards, willingness to work for improvement, etc.
