Maths subject leader Network Meeting June 2015

Agenda Reviewing the implementation of NC14 Using the NC14 to plan from Teaching maths – are we adopting the aims and purposes of NC14? What's learning like? Is it better? How are we making judgements about learning? Assessment updates Cross curricular maths

Your role in NC14 What support have you put in place for teachers and teaching assistants? What decisions have been made about teaching and learning pedagogies mental maths Problem solving and reasoning Calculation methods Communication with governors, parents and families

Implementing NC14 What is teaching and learning like and how do we know? Is it better than before? Review planning and books Pitch and expectations UAM Sequence of learning that develops knowledge and understanding (developing mastery isn’t just for the more able)

KS1 and KS2 assessment Feedback from assessment and moderation What next for NC 14? 85% of children should achieve the new expected standard by the end of primary school How are we making judgements about children’s learning? Moderation within and across schools

Assessment DfE to provide complete papers and mark schemes Performance descriptors for KS1 and KS2 NCETM to provide Exemplar materials of tasks, activities and questions that teachers can use to assess pupils’ depth of understanding (mastery) Both provided summer 2015

Mastery updates Primary specialist in teaching of mastery (NCETM) 140 teachers will be trained over a 2 year programme (3 per maths hub) First year is CPD and working in their own class, school Second year is out reach where schools receiving support will be charged

Cross curricular maths Many Ofsted reports have this an action point “there should be more opportunities for children to use and apply their maths in other areas of the curriculum” “maths needs to be embedded in other curriculum areas” What are your experiences of this?

Examples Thematic approaches – but maths appears to be separate The focus is learning about the other curriculum area (knowledge and skills) but how maths can be used so that children better understand the “other curriculum area” Theme or genuine cross curricular maths?

The other curriculum areas…. Art, science, geography, history, music, RE, PE, IT, DT, English, MFL Any examples of real maths in other curriculum areas?

Next time…… 20 th October 2015 am first and primaries 20 th October 2015 pm first and primaries 21 st October 2015 am middle schools All held at Finstall
