Judaism, Christianity, & Islam

What do all three have in common? Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all began in the Middle East. All three religions worship the same God.

What else do they have in common? All three are monotheistic. All three have a moral & ethical view of the world. –This means that they believe that there is right and wrong. All three believe that God will judge individuals for how they lived their life. All three have a specific holy book. Compared to the Asian religions, all three are much more alike than different.

What are Judaism’s main beliefs? Believe that the Jews are God’s chosen people. They call God Yahweh. The Torah is their holy book (it is also the first five books of the Christian Bible). Believe that God sent prophets to warn the Jews when they disobeyed God’s laws. Believe God will send a Messiah to lead them.

What are the main beliefs of Christianity? Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God. The religion is based on his teachings and their holy book, The Bible. Believe that Jesus was crucified, died, and then came back to life. This made up for the sins of humanity and allowed people to go to Heaven. Now the biggest religion in the world.

What are the main beliefs of Islam? Founded by Muhammad, who they believe was the last prophet. Muslims believe Muhammad was visited by an angel, who gave him the teachings in their holy book, the Qur'an (Koran). Islam means “submission to God” They call God Allah, which is just Arabic for God. The Five Pillars of Islam lay out their basic beliefs.

What are the Five Pillars? 1.Profession of Faith 2.Prayer 3.Charity 4.Fasting 5.Pilgrimage Don’t write these…we will go through them one by one.

Profession of Faith To become a Muslim, all you have to do is say: There is no god but God, and Mohammad is his prophet. أشهد أن لا إله إلاَّ الله و أشهد أن محمد رسول الله

Prayer Devout Muslims must pray 5 times a day facing Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.

Charity Muslims are expected to donate a certain amount of their income to charity. The amount varies depending on how much you make.

Fasting Muslims must fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Fasting lasts from sunup to sundown. Usually there is a large meal after sundown to break the fast.

Pilgrimage Also called Hajj. Every Muslim is expected to make a trip to Mecca at least once in their life.
