Settlement Services - Challenges Research shows that immigrants come to Canada healthier than the Canadian population but after five years, they are as or more “ill” –Diet changes –Stress increases Under employment Lack of job security –Mental health issues emerge and lack of accessible services complicate “illnesses” –Some evidence that the stress increases the use of “substances” –Culture conflict between parents and children/youth Inter-generational conflict Inter-cultural conflict –Increase in husband/wife conflict –Living with “In-laws” - issues and challenges 4
