 What made the Dred Scott case so important? How did this relate to events such as the Compromises of 1820 and 1850, or the issue of States and Federal Rights?

 Test: From Manifest Destiny up until Dred Scott on October 5 th !!! A week from today  Change in the study guide: Parts I, II, III will be due Friday to give you more time to study!! The essay we will go over Tuesday October 4 th, and we will play a review game

 1850’s were a complex time: Bleeding Kansas and the issue of popular sovereignty Fugitive Slave Laws being ignored and enforced Dred Scott Case John Browns Raid

One of only three 4 way Elections in History: Southern Democrats (Deep South): John C. Breckinridge Party Platform: - Die Hard protection of Slavery - Constitutional Right to slavery

 Stephen A. Douglas: Party Platform: -Popular Sovereignty -Lower Tariffs

 Party that sprung up over night: Made up of old politicians  John Bell: Platform: “Defense of the Union, Enforcement of the Law”

 Newer Party from  Convention: Leading candidate was William H. Seward, very anti- slavery, but thought of as too extreme.  Abraham Lincoln, saw as a moderate, got the nomination instead of Seward.

 Abraham Lincoln ended up with the Nomination Platform: Trying to be More appealing to the Upper South -Higher Tariffs -Homestead in the West -Stop the spread of slavery
