Source and Note Card Instructions The demystification of the process

Numbering the Source Card Source 1 Source 2 Source 3 Source 4 Source 5

Adding Source Information Source 1 Use the Appropriate MLA Citation for your source type. Please use the OWL for the proper citation formats for whatever source type you are using. Easybib.com is also useful for creating a proper citation if you are struggling. Place location information for the source here in the lower left hand corner. (URL or Call#)

Example Book and Web Source Cards Source 1 Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science. New York: Penguin, Print GLE Source 2 Felluga, Dino. Guide to Literary and Critical Theory. Purdue U, 28 Nov Web. 10 May

Creating your Note Cards Source 1 “This is a direct quote card. It contains quotation marks to denote the fact that it is directly copied from the text and is, in fact, another person’s words. These quotes do not mean that they are already in quotes from the article. This also means that you do not need to note anywhere else on the card that it is a quote card. If it is a quote card, it has quotes around the portion of the information you are using.” Pg. 125Sara Spencer This remains the same number for every piece of information that you pull from that source (i.e. book, website, magazine, newspaper, etc.) This needs to be on every card that you write down information on that comes from that source. New source, new number. Source 1 This would be a paraphrase card. There are no “” around anything. This is because these are your own words. This is the portion of the program where you take another person’s ideas and information and put them into words and phrasing that you understand. Pg. 125

On the Back Source 1 This would be a paraphrase card. There are no “” around anything. This is because these are your own words. This is the portion of the program where you take another person’s ideas and information and put them into words and phrasing that you understand. Pg. 125 Sara Spencer

To Review Each new book, website, newspaper article, magazine article, interview, or other source of information gets a new source number. Each piece of information from that source gets labeled in the upper right hand corner with that source’s number. Quote cards don’t need to be labeled as quotes, the quotation marks label it as such. Don’t forget the page numbers and the author’s name, when appropriate. Use your resources to get the proper MLA citation of your source to place on your source card. Your name must be on the back of ALL your index cards.
