Circulatory/Respiratory And Nervous Systems

Question Why do you think the circulatory system is also called the transportation system? Take about 4 minutes to write your answer.

Circulatory System Function: To carry oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the cells. To remove waste. The main engine is the heart.

Heart Muscle that acts as a pump. Pushes blood through blood vessels in the entire body. It has 4 chambers. – Right Atrium – Right Ventricle – Left Atrium – Left Ventricle

How the Circulatory System Works Lungs Right Ventricle Right Atrium Left Atrium Left Ventricle Arteries Veins Capillaries

Blood Pressure The force that is created on the walls of the blood vessels. Contraction = Greatest pressure Relaxation = is the time between beats

Blood Blood has 4 parts – Plasma Is the car of the transportation system. Made up of 92% water. Carries dissolved food. – Red blood cells Carry oxygen to cells and takes waste away from them. – White blood cells Are disease and germ fighters. – Platelets Help your blood clot.

Circulatory System health care Healthy diet – Eat less of fat, sugar, salt and caffeine to keep blood vessels wide open and keep blood pressure normal. Avoid stress – Stress strains your heart. Exercise – Makes lungs and heart stronger. Avoid tobacco – It reduces the amount of oxygen in your arteries. Healthy Weight – Puts less strain on your heart.

Question How come when you play softball you know when to raise your hand to catch the ball and also ho do you know when the ball has arrived to your glove? Take about 4 minutes to write your response.

Nervous System These messages are called neurons. The nervous system is made up of neurons. Neurons are the language of the system.

Neurons There are 3 types of Neurons – Sensory Receive information from the outside world. – Motor Send messages to the muscles. – Connecting Connect sensory and motor neurons and pass information between the two.

Communication Center Divided into two systems. Central – Consists of the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral – Consists of nerves that branch out Central system.

Brain Main information center of our body. Has three parts. – Cerebrum Controls vision, touch and thinking. – Cerebellum Controls balance and coordination. – Brain stem Controls voluntary and involuntary actions of your body.

Brain Stem Has control over different activities that we have no control over. – Pupils – get wider in the dim light and smaller when the police shine a flashlight in them. – Controls digestion of food. – Makes the heart beat constantly. – Makes us breath continuously.

Keeping control of communication Balanced nutrition – Keeps your brain and spinal cord healthy Rest – Will provide you with freshness Avoid drugs – Using drugs will kill brain cells Avoid alcohol – Drinking alcohol will kill brain cells
