2012 Gulf Oil Spill Timeline

You’ve been hired! Your challenge is to extract the cap from the well-head as quickly as possible to avoid any more oil spilling into the ocean. *Cap = Golf Ball *Well-head = Large tube/graduated cylinder

Problem: Extract the cap (golf ball) from the well-head (tube) Materials available: --1 meter string (100 cm or about 1 yard) --30 cm tape (about 1 foot) --1 sheet of 8.5”x14” paper --scissors (for manufacturing only--not for extraction)

Rules of Engagement -Use supplied materials only -All members help manufacture, 1 person extracts ball -Only handle materials at test time -Must manufacture the design concept drawn -Time= 3 min to manufacture & extract -Tube must remain vertical on its own. -May not touch outside of tube with ANYTHING (hands included). -No forces/items added to inside of tube to hold it vertical -Violation of above=disqualification

Timeline 1.3 min= INDIVIDUAL brainstorming (quick NB sketches) 1.Get into (two table) teams 1.8 min= teams brainstorm/collect ideas, select best concept, finalize WHITEBOARD sketch of best concept a.Remember to: i. Generate multiple ideas/solutions before selecting one. i. Involve everyone in the process

Timeline 4.1 min=assign responsibilities for manufacturing and testing 5.3 min=manufacture a concept and attempt to extract the golf ball The team with the shortest retrieval time wins!

Discussion 1.How did your end design that was manufactured differ from individual ideas brainstormed? 1.How did you decide on your design? 1.What “trade offs” did you have to accept? 1.What would you change/do again? 1.What did/do successful groups do? 1.What did you learn that will help you in future activities?
