WRITING PROCEDURES

 Procedure - a set of instructions for performing a task.  The task can be physical or mental EXAMPLE Physical - taking the mass of a paper clip Mental – making a metric conversion  Procedures are among the best known formats in technical communication.  Procedures tell users "how."

 To do something  Various parts of a task relate to one another  Something was done.  Something will be done.

DEFINITI ON - SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR *HOW* TO DO SOMETHING

1) List the materials.  MATERIALS  List all materials needed before listing the procedures  Present supplies needed as a checkoff list

 MATERIALS  EXAMPLE Before starting the procedure, get these supplies: Tape (1 roll) Scissors (1 pair) Construction paper (2 sheets)

DEFINITI ON WRITING PROCEDU RES -SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR *HOW* TO DO SOMETHING 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS

2)Provide an estimate of the time needed to complete the procedure.  Over estimate the time  Allows users to plan their time out accordingly so that they finish in time

DEFINITI ON WRITING PROCEDU RES -SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR *HOW* TO DO SOMETHING 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS 2. ESTIMATE TIME FOR PROCEDURE

3) Write procedures as numbered lists.  Begin each step with a number. The number tells readers the sequence for performing the steps.

DEFINITI ON WRITING PROCEDU RES -SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR *HOW* TO DO SOMETHING 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS 2. ESTIMATE TIME FOR PROCEDURE 3. WRITE AS NUMBERED LIST IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER.

4) To make things especially clear, draw a Quick Guide (picture form) for each step.

EXAMPLE (How to start a car)  Open the car door.  Sit behind the steering wheel.  Start the engine. Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key away from you. Wait for the engine to start. You will hear a noise.  Begin to drive.

WRITING PROCEDU RES 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS 2. ESTIMATE TIME FOR PROCEDURE 3. WRITE AS NUMBERED LIST IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER. 4. MAKE A QUICKGUIDE (PICTURE FORM)

5) Limit each step in a procedure to one task.

BAD STEP: 1. Measure 25mg of salt, 35mg of sugar, and add it do 500mL of water. GOOD STEPS: 1. Measure 25mg of salt. 2. Measure 35mg of sugar. 3. Add sugar & salt to 500mL of water.

WRITING PROCEDU RES 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS 2. ESTIMATE TIME FOR PROCEDURE 3. WRITE AS NUMBERED LIST IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER. 4. MAKE A QUICKGUIDE (PICTURE FORM) 5. LIMIT EACH STEP TO ONE TASK.

1. You will work with a partner to see if you can give good directions/procedures. 2. Without looking at your partner’s picture, take 5 minutes and write down the procedures you will tell your partner to draw your picture. 3. After 5 minutes, you will face back-to-back and give your partner directions on how to draw the picture. 4. After you are done, you will switch roles.

 Take 2 minutes to decide who has the BEST directions for how to make a PB&J sandwich.

WRITING PROCEDU RES 1. LIST ALL MATERIALS & QUANTITIES EX: (1 ROLL) TAPE (1 PAIR) SCISSORS (2) BALLOONS 2. ESTIMATE TIME FOR PROCEDURE 3. WRITE AS NUMBERED LIST IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER. 4.
