Agenda What’s a protein Kwashiorkor in Zimbabwe Amino acids and proteins Building a protein

Copy into your notes! MOLECULEWHAT IT’S MADE OF?FUNCTION Proteins Amino Acids Controls everything that happens in our bodies Nucleic Acid Nucleotides (Small units of DNA) Stores genetic material

Zimbwawe and Kwashiorkor We’re going to read an article as a class about Kwashiorkor pronounced (qua-she-a-kor). Kwashiorkor is from the Ga language of coastal Ghana and translated means “the sickness the baby gets when the new baby comes.”

Proteins and amino acids Proteins are made of amino acids. There are many different proteins in our body and they have different functions. The order of amino acids determines the type of protein and its function.

Proteins and amino acids There are 20 amino acids and over 200,000 proteins. How does this work? IE: How many different words can you make using the letters “A, T, S, N, D, E”

Building a protein We’re going to be making a protein using different amino acids. Clearly this is figurative. You’ll need to be on your best behavior and please be careful.
